Simone’s Elemental Playlist for Perfect Chemistry

Check out the songs that play in her head as various scenes play out in her novel.

~The List~

1. So What, by Pink
when Brittany is fed up with everything and does things that she wants instead of what’s expected of her

2. When I Grow Up, by The Pussycat Dolls
when Alex looks at Brittany and her friends – he thinks that’s what she’s like

3. Addicted, by Saving Abel
when Alex and Brittany can’t stop thinking about each other – such a great song!

4. My People, by R.P.M.
I love this Chicago Latino rapper.  This song reminds me of Paco at the end, and how Alex is committed to his family and culture.

5. Now and Later, by R.P.M. / Krazy, by Pitbull
I totally imagine Brittany and Alex dancing to these songs at the club.

6. Wherever You Will Go, by The Calling
I played this a lot while writing the ending especially! I totally see this playing while Alex is in Mexico after he left Brittany.

7. Never Say Never, by The Fray
I hear this when Alex is in the rain, when he took her away from the warehouse.

8. Say When, by The Fray
When Alex waits for Brittany to make the decision to leave Colin and take a chance on him.

9. Smooth, by Santana and Rob Thomas
I imagine this as one of the songs playing in the hallway between classes.

10. Give me Your Love, by Pat McCurdy
I think Alex would be thinking this when he knows Brittany is with Colin.

11. Don’t Forget, by Demi Lavato
This is the song for Brittany, after she finds the hand warmers in her locker, and when she is in college and takes his bandanna out – she will never forget their time together.

12. Tu Principe, by Daddy Yankee
I imagine this song being played at the warehouse when Brittany confronts Alex.  I love the Romeo and Juliet reference.

13. Thinking of You, by Katy Perry
for when Brittany is at the beach with Colin, and all she can think about is Alex

14. Not Listening, by Papa Roach
This is a very good fight song, which I imagine playing when Alex, Paco, and his friends are fighting the rival gang at the park.

15. Hero, by Enrique Iglesias
Sigh….this would be a great song to play in the scene at the end when Brittany and Alex are finally “together” at Enrique’s Auto Body.

16. Sorry, by Buckcherry
the perfect song for when Alex wishes he could take back things he said when he was in the hospital

Quiz

Do you and your guy have Perfect Chemistry?

Longtime boyfriend or casual crush, is your guy your perfect match? Take this quiz to find out!

1. You’ve been crushing on this guy for awhile, and now you’re paired together as lab partners in class. What happens?

a) He does all the talking. He thinks you hang on every word he says, but to be honest, you’re kind of bored.
b) You try to get under each other’s skin with digs and jokes. It’s fun, because you know what makes each other tick.
c) You sit together, but work in silence. It’s not like you know each other or anything.
d) You make small talk. You’re not really talking about anything that matters, but at least you’re chatting.

2. You and your man are alone on a beach and you are not feeling well. You are obviously dizzy, and he can tell. What would he do?

a) Be there to catch you if you fall, and do whatever it takes to help you get home safely.
b) He’d point out in a worried way that you don’t look so good. Maybe he’d offer to call someone for you, you’re not sure.
c) He’d act all concerned, but then use the opportunity to grope you a bit. So not cool.
d) You’d be too embarrassed to let him see you like that. You’d try to get away from him as soon as possible, no matter how dizzy you are.

3. You’ve had a date planned with your guy for days, only now you have to cancel it at the last minute to babysit. When you break the bad news, how does he react?

a) He grumbles and whines a lot. Then he accuses you of blowing him off to be with some other guy.
b) He probably thinks you’re not interested now that you’ve cancelled. There go your chances with him
c) He’s fine with it, and suggests another time to reschedule that date. He knows you wouldn’t blow him off unless you really have to.
d) He understands completely, and even offers to come with you and help out, just so he can be around you.

4. Your guy invites you to a family event, which means his mother’s there, and she does not seem happy to see you. How do you deal?

a) Have a serious talk with the lady in charge about your feelings for her son. The guy’s important enough to you that you need his family to know you care
b) You’re quiet the whole time, trying not to show how much you’re freaking out inside. You shouldn’t have accepted the invitation to begin with
c) You are polite and gracious, on your best behavior. When she sees the way you treat her baby boy, she’ll come around
d) Ignore her and focus on your man. After all, he’s the one you’re dating. Who cares what his mom thinks?

5. If you knew your man was in danger, how far would you go to help him?

a) He probably wouldn’t want your help, so you wouldn’t do anything—except, of course, worry.
b) You’d try to help as best you could, but you wouldn’t put yourself at risk for the guy.
c) Hey, if he got himself in trouble, that’s his problem, not yours.
d) You’d do anything to help him because you know he’d do the same for you.

6. You and your guy got into a fight last week, and he said some things that were . . . mean, to put it politely. Now, he’s apologizing. Do you forgive him?

a) Probably, but you’ll give him a hard time about it for a while. And he’s going to have to make it up to you
b) No. He lost his chance when he said those things to you
c) Are you kidding? You can’t imagine getting close enough to him to even have a conversation, let alone a fight
d) Yes, but only if you’re convinced he realizes what he said was wrong, and that he truly wants to make it up to you. You may be really into him, but you’re no pushover

7. You and your crush are from different backgrounds. How do you bridge the gap?

a) Try to learn about his culture and the way he grew up, while at the same time focusing on the things you have in common. That balance of being very different yet still somehow fitting together is what keeps your relationship interesting
b) You don’t really care where he comes from, just as long as he gives you what you want
c) Talk to him about the things you share instead of your differences
d) Ignore your differences, maybe? You wouldn’t want to bring up any sensitive subjects because you don’t want to ruin your chances

   Your Score =

***

28-24 Points: Congratulations! You and your crush have totally passionate, completely explosive, Brittany-and-Alex-style perfect chemistry. You care about each other deeply, you trust each other, and you each want the other to chase after your dreams. Just be careful that your love isn’t so intense that you shut out the rest of your life. Remember that Brittany and Alex didn’t get through their hard times without Paco, Sierra, Gary, and Shelley, their good friends.

23-17 Points: Your chemistry with your crush may not always be perfect, but you’re definitely compatible elements. You may not always get along (it wouldn’t be natural if you did) but you have a lot of fun together. Keep bonding, and the results are sure to be interesting.

16-11 Points: Face it. You’re more like Carmen and Alex or Brittany and Colin than you are like Brittany and Alex. You and your guy might be getting something from each other (drama? status?), but it’s no deep understanding of each other’s souls. As long as you’re having fun, it’s not bad to date casually. Just keep your eyes peeled. There might be a guy that is a better fit for you lurking under your radar.

10-7 Points: Honey, how are you going to have chemistry with your crush if you’re not willing to make an effort? You’re so busy worrying about what he thinks of you that you’re not even showing him who you are. It wasn’t until Alex and Brittany really got to know each other that they realized they had a connection. Take a risk, and maybe even suggest a date. Your bond may or may not be strong, but you’ll never know unless you leap.
